DISASTER RELIEF UPDATEAt the February meeting of the Presbytery of Mississippi, we approved giving Westminster Presbyterian Church, Hattiesburg $25,000 to be spent for disaster relief in their area following the January 21st tornadoes.

The Session of Westminster voted to divide the funds between R3SM (Recover, Rebuild, Restore South Mississippi) $15,000 and the Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center $10,000.

R3SM is a non-profit community organization established after Hurricane Katrina to bring aid and relief to people whose homes were damaged by the storm. The organization has continued its work since then in helping tornado and flood victims. Westminster has partnered with R3SM providing
volunteers to help with clean up and repair. R3SM is leading the effort to help people repair their homes; people who often do not have homeowners insurance or the financial means to rebuild.

The Oseola McCarty Youth Development Center offers a range of high-quality educational and recreational extracurricular services. The Center also works with families to provide sustained support and strengthen family ties. The Center received substantial damage from the tornado and was uninsured for the type of damage it received. Westminster will partner with the Center in using these funds to pay contractors and for materials for the repairs.
